Today I am participating in a session on “Media and information literacy – why is it important?” at the ministry of Education arranged by among others the Swedish National UNESCO Council, including Lena Adelsohn-Liljeroth, the minister of culture as one of the speakers. The background is a debate about how the change character of media culture change through the use of modern information technology. New ways to search for knowledge, entertainment and social interaction brings both opportunities and risks, especially for young media users. There is a need for more discussion of the importance of media and information literacy to increase our awareness of how the media works, give us the tools to interpret and evaluate the information they provide and stimulate their own creative expression.
