I write in Svenska Dagbladet about children and the Internet

by Jan Gulliksen on January 21, 2013

During the last couple of weeks, there has been a debate in the media about how children abuse each other on the Internet, with the Instagram riot in Gothenburg as a recent example. I think this is the wrong way to look at things, because there are definitely more possibilities than there are risks with children using the Internet.

Recent studies from EU Kids Online actually show that children that are too controlled online do not learn about the real risks, and instead often develop a habit of totally avoiding the Internet. And this is disturbing, since studies at Oxford University suggests that the real danger concerning children and the Internet is lack of access.

I think this is a very important aspect of the debate, and therefore I wrote an op-ed article on this topic in Svenska Dagbladet, one of the largest daily newspapers in Sweden (in Swedish).
